Ah, the first day of Spring 2012... Let’s visualize it. I see buds and sprouts and smiles and sunshine and ice cream cones. How about you? Oh, you see puddles and wind damage and snow in the hills? Honey, I think you need a hearty breakfast of Chicken Fried Steak with a couple of over-easies and some homemade biscuits, chased with a couple cups o’ good strong java. C’mon a my house, c’mon.
Believe it or not, I’ve been working on some delicious new veggie/vegan recipes, as requested by a few of you. Veggie, I’m cool with. In fact I think we have some great veggie choices on our menu already. The fresh spinach, broccoli, scallions and ginger-sake-soy sauce take the Tofu Breakfast to the moon, Alice! And, of course, I know for a fact that our mushroom gravy & biscuits have become a favorite of some of our confirmed carnivores. Then there’s the popular Huevos Rancheros and the Phinney Spud Feast and don’t forget the Special Breakfast of Champions: A Big Breakfast Combo of eggs, hashbrowns, biscuits and a moo-velous Mae’s shake or smoothie. Oh, I could go on and on but you can find the veggie goodies all over the menu. Now the vegan thang will take me a while but please know that I’m working on it. And your feedback will be most welcome! For that matter, your recipe suggestions are welcome, too.
And in the next couple of weeks, we’ll be bringing you burgers and fries—available any time. I pulled them from the lunch menu a few years back when everybody and their brother was raving about the Red Mill, just up the block. Okay, okay, they’re still good, but we’ll offer a different kind of burger experience with a special grind of fresh beef from that fabulous Greenwood meat emporium: Better Meats—family owned and operated since Mama can remember. That’s where we get our Chicken Fried Steak, too. But, I digress...
I’m trying to pay more attention to this web page. I’d like to keep this Home Page fresh (this is my idea of fresh). Also, be sure that we have your email address (there’s a box at the front counter where you can submit) because we’re going to start with regular monthly emails. They won’t be sales pitches. I want them to feel like a little letter from home—comforting and funny and warm. I’ve tried to do FB, but I can’t keep up with it. It’s too impersonal. I don’t know...call me old fashioned. I have posted some fun pix there. Go to Mae’s Café, not Mae’s Phinney Ridge Café. The later is one that was put there by Google or somebody. I don’t know how to get rid of it.
